Edinson Cavani has not gotten a lot of playing time since Cristiano Ronaldo’s return to Manchester United this summer. But he definitely turned up when it mattered by putting in a great performance against Tottenham Hotspur, scoring a goal and helping the team to a 3-0 win. It was a game that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer knew that he needed to get a result in and he relied on the Uruguayan’s experience on this occasion.

And doing that, Solskjaer might have even come across a system that could work for this Manchester United team very well.

They did spectacularly with three at the back and two up front against Tottenham Hotspur and one would expect Solskjaer to continue with this system for the time being.

The Manchester United manager was full of praise for Cavani after the game and appeared to be blown away by the Uruguayan’s performance in training leading up to the match. As reported by the Mirror, Solskjaer told Sky Sports:

"“I’ve been here more or less three years as a manager.“Tuesday’s training performance by Edinson Cavani is probably the best performance anyone has put into a training session.”"

Cavani could become a regular feature in the Manchester United starting XI once again

It is safe to say that Cavani has not played nearly as much football as most people would have expected him to. But moving forward, he could become a regular feature in this Manchester United team once again.

If Solskjaer sticks with this new system, one would expect to see a lot more of the partnership between Ronaldo and Cavani up top.

Neither of them might be in their prime as a footballer right now, but it has not appeared to have an effect on their goalscoring abilities. Both of them appeared to flourish in an attacking partnership up top and this could very possibly be the way for Solskjaer to go moving forward.

Of course, it is still very early to come to any conclusions but it is safe to say that the partnership has a lot of potential and could help turn Manchester United’s season around.
