Manchester United made history but not the kind that they would have wanted or expected as they suffered a 5-0 defeat at Old Trafford against Liverpool. It is safe to say that this is a day that will be remembered for years to come but not fondly when it comes to the Red Devils supporters.
After the comeback 3-2 win against Atalanta, there were hopes that this side would be able to turn things around and get a result against Jurgen KIopp’s team.
It is safe to say that that did not turn out to be the case. Not even close.
A hattrick from Mohamed Salah and a goal each from Diogo Jota and Naby Keita were enough to hand Liverpool a 5-0 win.
Manchester United vs Liverpool: 3 things we learned
Here are three things we learned as Manchester United suffered a historic 5-0 defeat at the hands of Liverpool at Old Trafford:
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer needs to turn things around from the very next game
It is hard to judge where Solskjaer stands at this point of time. There have been suggestions that the club are ready to back him completely and believe that he is the right guy for the job.
But on the other hand, the results have not been good at all. And this 5-0 defeat at the hands of Liverpool will certainly raise a lot of questions about the Norwegian manager’s future at Old Trafford.
The fact that Manchester United won their midweek game against Atalanta probably means that Solskjaer is safe for now. But if results don’t improve and quickly, then the club might have very little choice but to make a change.
It remains to be seen how things unfold over the coming weeks but it goes without saying that Solskjaer will be someone who is a topic of continuous debate.
