Manchester United experienced an exceptional transfer window this summer. The Red Devils signed Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane, Cristiano Ronaldo and Tom Heaton in what was easily the club’s best transfer window in recent times.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is believed to have been looking to add a midfielder to their ranks as well but that did not materialise. The Red Devils would be expected to try to fill that position in the near future though.

Manchester United are not light in numbers in the middle of the park. But they don’t appear to have a long-term solution in defensive midfield. Nemanja Matic is the most natural player that the club have there but at 33 years of age, he is no longer in his prime.

West Ham United’s Declan Rice is someone who has been heavily linked with a move to Manchester United in recent times. But a move has not materialised till now, with the Hammers believed to be looking for a transfer fee around £100 million to let the England international leave.

Manchester United’s hopes of signing Rice handed massive boost

As reported by The Athletic (via CaughtOffside), West Ham United do not want to let Rice leave but with the player having high ambitions, this season could very well be his last with the Hammers.

Other than Manchester United, Chelsea are believed to have kept a keen eye on the Englishman as well. Part of the Blues’ academy at one point of time, he was heavily linked with a return to Stamford Bridge during Frank Lampard’s time as the club’s manager. Manchester City are another club believed to have an interest in the midfielder.

He has been one of the best defensive midfielders in English football for a while and appears to have added a few goals to his game recently as well.

Of course, Rice has quite a few years left on his current deal with West Ham United. As a result, signing him next summer won’t be easy.
