Manchester United have a brilliant scouting network. This has been shown in the transfer signings they have made over the last few seasons. Thanks to their scouting department, they have brought in several youngsters from around the world who are expected to have huge futures in football.

Manchester United leaned more towards signing marquee players this summer though, consequently signing the likes of Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane and Cristiano Ronaldo. Tom Heaton also arrived on a free transfer.

In midweek, when Manchester United were busy playing against Villareal in their second group stage match of the 2021/22 UEFA Champions League campaign, their scouts were attending the game between SL Benfica and FC Barcelona in Lisbon.

As reported by A BOLA (via Sport Witness), Manchester United, along with 30 other clubs across Europe, sent emissaries to attend Benfica’s game against Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League. The Portuguese club clinched an unexpected 3-0 win over the Spanish giants on the night.

Manchester United had scouts watching Benfica vs Barcelona

It is not mentioned whether the Manchester United scouts were watching any particular player or players. But the performance of Darwin Nunez might’ve caught their eye. The Uruguayan forward picked up a brace and hit the post once against Barcelona.

Other than Nunez, Rafa Silva was impressive in midfield. His goal in the 69th-minute of the match extended Benfica’s lead to 2-0 before Nunez would add a third from the spot, 10 minutes later.

On the same night, Manchester United pulled off another extraordinary comeback win in the stoppage time of the game against Villarreal.

Cristiano Ronaldo scored the late winner to seal a dramatic win for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side at Old Trafford. They didn’t play particularly well in the game, but they will definitely be delighted with the three points on the night.

Fans would have been hoping that the result gave the side a much needed boost and helped them bounce back. But on Saturday, they could manage only a 1-1 draw against Everton in the Premier League.
