Manchester United have not made a great start to the season. And naturally, questions have been raised about the future of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at Old Trafford. The Red Devils are already out of the League Cup, lost their opening UEFA Champions League group stage game against Young Boys and have slid down the Premier League table recently after sitting at the top a couple of weeks ago.
The win against Villarreal must have taken a lot of the pressure off of their shoulders. Cristiano Ronaldo scored deep into stoppage time to breath new life into their Champions League campaign. But it could have so easily gone the other way if not for the heroics of David de Gea in goal. The performance on the night was not great at all.
Antonio Conte has been linked with the club in recent times as a possible replacement for Solskjaer. He is one of the top managers in world football, without a club at the moment and rumours have suggested that he would be interested in managing Manchester United. Thus, one has to feel that if the Red Devils tried to, they could probably pull off an appointment.
But as reported by The Athletic (via Express), Manchester United are entirely Solskjaer in. They are convinced that the Norwegian manager is the right man for the job.
Manchester United need to improve a lot if they are to win titles this season
It is clear that Manchester United have a world-class match-winner in their team right now in the form of Ronaldo. While no longer in his peak as a footballer, the Portuguese superstar can still decide matches, like he did against Villarreal.
The performances will have to improve a lot though. In that regard, it appears that Solskjaer’s side have taken a step back this season.
There were a number of occasions last season when they went behind and it almost looked inevitable that they would come back and win the game ultimately. They will need to rediscover that this time around as well. Of course, it would be great if they do not go a goal behind at all in the first place.
