Raphael Varane, a four-time Champions League winner with Real Madrid, joined Manchester United in the recently concluded summer transfer window in what was a massive coup for the Red Devils. As expected, he has come in and immediately established himself as a first-team regular in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team. And he could very well be the backbone of this defence for the foreseeable future.
One player whose future at Old Trafford appears to be up in the air at the moment though is Paul Pogba. His current deal runs out next summer.
Pogba returned to Manchester United in the summer of 2016, and has just one year left on his contract. And he does not appear to be close to signing a new deal at this point of time either.
Varane has admitted that he hopes that his club and international teammate ends up staying at the Theatre of Dreams. While speaking with TV2 and as reported by Metro, the defender said:
"‘It is of course his decision, but of course I hope he stays here for a long time.‘He is a fantastic player, so undoubtedly I hope he stays.’"
Pogba’s future at Manchester United remains up in the air
Pogba has been heavily linked with clubs like Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain over the past few months. And if he was to leave as a free agent next summer, there is not expected to be any lack of suitors. Some rumours have even suggested though that he is open to staying at Manchester United following the arrival of Ronaldo this summer.
Pogba is one of the most important members of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team right now. Not only is he a regular in the starting XI but he has also made a fantastic start to this campaign and has been one of Manchester United’s best players this season till now.
Thus, it remains to be seen what the future holds for the Frenchman at Old Trafford. One does have to feel though that his decision might come down to whether the club are able to win silverware this season, after four straight trophyless campaigns.
