It is safe to say that Manchester United have made quite a bit of progress ever since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was appointed as the manager of the club. Not too long ago, the Red Devils were bouncing around the Premier League table, after Sir Alex Ferguson had retired. But over the past couple of seasons, they have found consistency and have managed to establish themselves in the top four. Now, they will be looking to take the next step and get back to the top of English football.

There have been some promising signs regarding that, but some worrying signs as well. On a positive note, Manchester United sit joint top of the Premier League along with Chelsea and Liverpool, although those two have a better goal difference.

But on the other hand, some of the performances recently have been shaky. They have lost against Young Boys in the UEFA Champions League group stage opener and were knocked out of the League Cup in the third round by West Ham United. And their league displays against Southampton, Wolverhampton Wanderers and West Ham United were not brilliant either.

Following the defeat at the hands of West Ham United in the League Cup, Solskjaer admitted that this Manchester United team are not great playing against a low block. As reported by Manchester Evening News, he told MUTV:

"“We are not great when we play against a low-block and just sling crosses in because we are not that type of team, we didn’t have them types of players. So we tried to play round them, through them, get in behind them but we did not create enough big chances.”"

Solskjaer admits to Manchester United’s weakness

There are a couple of worries regarding this. First is that Solskjaer has admitted to the fact that Manchester United are not great when playing against a low-block.

The second is that when playing against Manchester United, the majority of teams would be expected to sit deep and use that kind of a strategy. Thus, the manager needs to find an answer as soon as possible to this problem.

The League Cup elimination was a massive disappointment but the focus must now return to the Premier League, with Manchester United facing Aston Villa this weekend.
