Manchester United enjoyed a spectacular summer transfer window with Cristiano Ronaldo, Raphael Varane, Jadon Sancho and Tom Heaton joining the club. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side had already finished second in the Premier League last season and with these additions, they must be considered as one of the favourites in the title race this time around.

In recent seasons, defence has been viewed by many as one of Manchester United’s weaknesses. Thus, the signing of Varane was massive for the club.

Not many defenders in world football today have the combination of world-class quality and experience that Varane possesses. He won everything that there was to win during his time with Real Madrid and also lifted the World Cup with the France national team in 2018.

It appears that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Paul Pogba both had an influence on his decision to move to Manchester United. As reported by Sky Sports, while speaking about the manager, Varane said:

"“He spoke to me about the ambition of the team, and how I would feel playing for Manchester United.”"

On the other hand, talking about his France international teammate, the defender said:

"“Paul spoke to me about the club, about the atmosphere, about the expectations.“Of course, he is a great player. But he also has very good, positive energy. He is a leader for the group. I’ve known him for a very long time so I’m happy to play with him.”"

Varane could prove to be a massive addition to this Manchester United team

It is natural that Varane might take some time to adjust to his new surroundings after spending such a long time at Real Madrid. But once he does, he could prove to be a massive addition to the club.

On paper, the backline of him, Harry Maguire, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Luke Shaw looks like one of the best in world football. Now, it is more about the gelling together and working as an unit. The potential is spectacular though.

It remains to be seen how things turn out for Manchester United over the coming months but they have made a decent start to the season. While they might have lost their opening game of the Champions League campaign, they currently sit at the top of the Premier League table after four games with 10 points. While Chelsea and Liverpool have the same number of points and goal difference, it is Solskjaer’s side who have scored the most goals out of the three.
