Manchester United managed to strengthen their squad considerably over the course of the summer. The club pulled off signings of Cristiano Ronaldo, Raphael Varane, Jadon Sancho and Tom Heaton, and must be considered as one of the favourites in the Premier League title race this season. After four games, they sit on top of the table with 10 points. Chelsea and Liverpool have the same number of points and goal difference but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have scored more goals.

Now though, it looks like that the Red Devils’ focus is on extending the contracts of those players who are already at the club.

Recent rumours have suggested that Bruno Fernandes is closing on a massive new deal while there is hope that Paul Pogba might end up extending his deal as well. And Solskjaer has confirmed that Manchester United are in talks with Jesse Lingard as well over a new deal.

As reported by Sky Sports, the Manchester United manager said about Lingard’s contract situation:

"“He’s got this season left of his contract and the club is talking to him and his dad, and we see him as a Man United player in the future as well.“Jesse has come back to us after a great spell at West Ham. He showed his qualities, he’s got back into the England squad and he’s scoring goals for England.“We really want to see the best of Jesse this season and we hope to see him. We support him, and we hope to keep him here with us. He’s a Red through and through.”"

Lingard struggled to break into Solskjaer’s first-team in the first half of the previous campaign and spent the second half of the season on loan at West Ham United. It is there that he truly flourished and played some of the best football of his career.

According to stats from Transfermarkt, Lingard scored 9 goals and provided 5 assists in 16 appearances for West Ham United.

It is safe to say that during that period of time, he was one of the best players in the entire Premier League. Now back at Old Trafford, he is yet to make his first start for the club this season.

Things have been mixed for Lingard lately, he scored in the game against Newcastle United after coming on as a substitute and even found the back of the net for the England national team recently but then it was his misplaced pass that led to Young Boys’ winner in the UEFA Champions League group stage opening game.
