There is no doubting the fact that Manchester United have made a lot of progress over the past few seasons under the management of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Following Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement, the Red Devils had bounced around the Premier League table for quite a few seasons.

But following the arrival of Solskjaer, they certainly seem much more stable in this respect. They finished third in his first full season as the Manchester United manager and second in the following one. And after four games this season, they sit at first in the Premier League table although there is still a long way to go.

One of the areas that has been a worry for Manchester United for some time now though is their defence. And despite the arrival of Raphael Varane this summer, that still appears to be the case now.

Solskjaer’s side had five defenders on the pitch in the second half but ended up conceding twice against Young Boys after the break. And it was just not a one-off performance that they have given away a number of chances.

Manchester United’s defence remains a worry

Manchester United had given away a number of chances in the recent game against Wolverhampton Wanderers as well and they most probably would have won comfortably if they had taken them. Newcastle United also had chances to score more than one goal last weekend.

Of course, it is not just the defence that is giving away chances but the entire team. And that is why, the Red Devils need to be more solid defensively all over the pitch.

What is even more worrying is perhaps the fact that Manchester United have not faced any world-class teams yet this season and it will be interesting to see how they do when they face the likes of Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool in the Premier League.

One thing is for sure though, if they are to win trophies, their defence needs to be more solid. Of course, it must be pointed out that it is still early days for the combination of Varane, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw, and once they gel better together, they could end up forming one of the best backlines in England.
