Heading into the game, Manchester United were clear favourites. And it had looked like things would go the way of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side after Cristiano Ronaldo gave them the lead in the 13th minute of the game from a brilliant Bruno Fernandes ball. Things did not go the Red Devils way after that though.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka was sent off just after the half-hour mark. It led to Solskjaer making a tactical change and Manchester United even had five defenders on the pitch after half-time. But it was not enough to stop Young Boys from scoring.

The hosts would equalise in the 66th minute and then score deep into stoppage time when the Red Devils played themselves into trouble, to come out of the game with a 2-1 win.

It goes without saying that this result is a massive disappointment for Manchester United. While they are still favourites to make it into the knockout phase, things just became a lot tougher.

Manchester United Player Ratings vs Young Boys

Here’s how we rated the Manchester United players in their 2-1 defeat at the hands of Young Boys in the Champions League group stage opener:

David de Gea – 6.5

Aaron Wan-Bissaka – 3

Harry Maguire – 5.5

Victor Lindelof – 5

Luke Shaw – 6.5

Paul Pogba – 5.5

Cristiano Ronaldo – 7

It is safe to say that it was a night to forget for Solskjaer’s side. Many fans would have been hoping for a big win on the night but it was just the exact opposite.

Not only did Young Boys win but it was not a surprise either, considering how many chances they had.

This is just the beginning of the group stage though and Manchester United must remain confident in their ability to get through to the knockout phase. There is still a lot of quality in this side and who knows how things would have gone if Wan-Bissaka had not been sent off.
