It was a dream return to Old Trafford for Cristiano Ronaldo as he scored twice on his second debut for Manchester United to help them to a 4-1 win against Newcastle United.

Ronaldo was in the right place at the right time for the first one as Freddie Woodman spilled the ball onto his path. And the second one was a finish through the goalkeeper’s legs to put the Red Devils back in the lead after Newcastle United had equalised just a few minutes earlier.

Overall, it was a brilliant return for the Portuguese superstar, who had already established himself as a club legend during his first stint at the Theatre of Dreams and will be hoping to build on that legacy this time around.

Considering how many goals he has scored through the course of his career, him scoring was not a huge surprise. As reported by Sky Sports, speaking after the game, Ronaldo said:

"“I expected one, but not two.“Of course, I’m happy to score the goals, I won’t deny that, but the most important thing is the team.”"

Talking about the fans, he said:

"“I didn’t expect they would sing all game my name so I was very nervous. Maybe it didn’t show, but I was. The reception is incredible, but I’m here to win games, to help the team and get the club back where they deserve.”"

Ronaldo can be a brilliant signing for Manchester United

There have been some questions about how Ronaldo would fit into this Manchester United team and the Premier League considering the fact that he is 36 years of age and no longer in his prime as a footballer.

But it goes without saying that he still remains a brilliant player. It was just last season that he topped the Serie A scoring charts and was the top scorer at EURO 2020 as well. Thus, while he might not be the tricky winger he was in his first stint at Old Trafford, he is an even better goalscorer now.

Of course, it will be important that he continues to find the back of the net throughout the course of the season if Manchester United are to challenge for the Premier League title. But as far as starts go, this was as good as any to his second stint at the Theatre of Dreams.
