It is safe to say that things are looking up for Manchester United at the moment and the fans are very excited about Cristiano Ronaldo’s upcoming return to the pitch donning the red jersey of the club.
Of course, one question that has been raised following the Portuguese superstar’s return to the Theatre of Dreams this summer is regarding penalty duty. Bruno Fernandes has been the regular penalty taker for Manchester United since his arrival in January of 2020 and he has done very well with them.
But Ronaldo is also a brilliant penalty taker and he is someone who thrives on goals at this point of his career. In fact, he has been known for scoring important penalties through the course of his legendary career. Thus, it would make sense for him to take the spot kicks as well.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has revealed that he has had a chat with Ronaldo and Fernandes regarding the matter although he did not shed light on who the number one choice was. As reported by Metro, the manager said at a press conference on Friday:
"‘Of course, I’ve had a chat with the two of them.‘We’ve got two players there who I trust with my life to put a penalty away and that’s a great position to be in.‘They’ll know by the conversations we’ve had, and the conversations we have before games how we sort this and it’s going to be my decision what will happen and I think the two of them will just keep on doing what they do when they’re asked to take the penalties.’"
Manchester United have two brilliant penalty takers in Fernandes and Ronaldo
It is safe to say that both Fernandes and Ronaldo are brilliant penalty takers. And Solskjaer’s comments do suggest that he might be keeping his options open when it comes to spot kicks.
With how good both of them are at it, the situation and their form might end up deciding who takes the spot kicks, which is a good idea to be honest. Neither of them would be expected to miss many when it comes to penalties considering the consistency that they have shown in recent years from 12 yards out.
It will certainly be interesting to see who ends up taking the next penalty that Manchester United receive when both Fernandes and Ronaldo are on the pitch at the same time.
