Manchester United enjoyed a very successful summer transfer window this time around. They brought in Tom Heaton on a free transfer and signed Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund, Raphael Varane from Real Madrid and Cristiano Ronaldo from Juventus. Thus, the Red Devils have one of the strongest squads in world football right now.

On the other hand, players such as Daniel James, Tahith Chong, Facundo Pellistri, Brandon Williams, Axel Tuanzebe and Andreas Pereira departed Old Trafford, either permanently or on loan. Furthermore, they managed to keep hold of Paul Pogba, which must be considered as a major boost.

The only negative coming out of the summer transfer window might possibly be not signing a defensive midfielder. The club were believed to be interested in bringing in someone with the ability to play in the middle of the park but ultimately a move did not materialise. But it looks like the club have their eyes on strengthening there in the future already.

As reported by Manchester Evening News, Manchester United have identified Declan Rice as their principle midfield target for next summer’s transfer window and club figures have discussed the potential framework for a deal to sign him already.

Manchester United appear to have their eyes set on Rice

The Red Devils have been linked with a move for Rice as far back as when Jose Mourinho was the manager of the club.

Rice currently plays for West Ham United and has established himself as a regular in the England national team already at just 22 years of age.

Physically strong and dominant in the air, Rice could be the perfect man to play the defensive midfield role at the Theatre of Dreams.

Though, the race for his signature is expected to be tough as Chelsea are also believed to be interested in the midfielder. Interestingly, Rice was part of the Blues’ youth academy before moving to West Ham United.
