Manchester United have made some solid additions to their squad this summer having signed Cristiano Ronaldo, Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane and Tom Heaton. The side had finished second in the Premier League last season and must be considered as one of the favourites for the title this time around.

Of course, while the arrivals are a massive positive for the club overall, it could also mean less playing time for some players in the squad. One such player is Donny van de Beek.

The Dutch midfielder joined Manchester United last summer from Ajax and arrived at Old Trafford with a lot of expectations. It is safe to say though that things have not quite gone as most people would have expected as he has struggled to break into the starting XI.

Rumours floated around in the summer that there had been talks with Everton regarding a possible move for the Netherlands international and his agent, Guido Albers, appeared to confirm those rumours. While speaking with Ziggo Sport and as reported by the Mirror, he said:

"“Cristiano arrived on Friday which we knew was bad news for us. Pogba plays on the left, and with Cristiano’s arrival it means another extra player in midfield, with Pogba moving away from the left.“We had conversations with Solskjær and the board. We took the initiative to find a club and our search ended up at Everton. We opened talks with Marcel Brands and Farhad Moshiri.“On Monday night [before deadline day] we received a call from Solskjær and the club who told us that a transfer was out of question and that he had to report himself to training the next morning.”"

Can Van de Beek make his mark at Manchester United this season?

According to stats from Transfermarkt, Van de Beek made 36 appearances last season across all competitions, scoring once and providing 2 assists. It is safe to say that he was not nearly as effective as fans would have expected.

But at the end of the day, it was his first season in the Premier League. And there have been many top players in the past who have taken time to adjust to English football.

One can only hope that he finds his feet soon and finds his form for the Red Devils. He is yet to make an appearance this season and with the competition for places at the club right now, he will have to make the most of the chances that he gets in the future.
