If things would have gone a bit differently, Romelu Lukaku might still be a Manchester United player. He had a great first season with the Red Devils but it is in his second season at Old Trafford that things did not go his way.

According to stats from Transfermarkt, he scored 42 goals in 96 appearances for the club and eventually ended up moving to Inter Milan.

It is in Italy that he established himself as one of the best strikers in the world and was one of the biggest reasons behind Inter Milan’s Serie A title win last season. Lukaku was so impressive that Chelsea broke their transfer record this summer to bring him back to Stamford Bridge and he has already looked very impressive for them.

On the other hand, Manchester United signed Cristiano Ronaldo this summer in a stunning move. And some have compared Lukaku with the Portuguese legend in recent times. The Belgian does not appear keen on those comparisons though. As reported by Manchester Evening News, he said:

"“Don’t ever compare me to Cristiano Ronaldo, never.“Cristiano Ronaldo is, for me, in the top three best players in the history of football.“I’m not going to rank him from first to third but he’s in there.“What he has achieved in football today for players of my generation is something exceptional.“I was lucky enough to play against him in Italy and now that he’s back in the Premier League, it’s all good for English football.“As for the rest, comparing statistics and all that, it’s useless.”"

Did Manchester United make a mistake by letting Lukaku leave?

It is safe to say that the Red Devils have missed an out-and-out goalscorer ever since Lukaku left. Anthony Martial did a great job in the 2019/20 season while Edinson Cavani was brilliant in the second half of last season, but overall, nobody has been very consistent in that role.

With the addition of Ronaldo, the club finally have a player who thrives on goals. The Portuguese superstar might have been a tricky winger during his first stint at Old Trafford, but these days his game is based on finding the back of the net on a consistent basis.

On the other hand, Lukaku is expected to have a great season for Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea side, who are looking like genuine title contenders as well.
