Not too long ago, Saul Niguez was one of the most highly-rated midfielders in the world. But he has not been at the top of his game in recent times and it looks like he could be on his way out of Atletico Madrid this summer. The likes of Chelsea and Manchester United have been linked with a move for the 26-year-old.
Atletico Madrid are coming off of a very successful 2020/21 season, having won the La Liga title. But individually, it was not a great one for Saul. As a result, it looks like he is set to depart the club this summer.
As reported by AS, Saul’s idea is to leave. He is not comfortable in his role and does not want to play there, as he feels that is not his position. He wants to grow and has communicated this to the club.
While the Red Devils are in the transfer race for the midfielder, it looks like Chelsea are more advanced at this point of time. Fabrizio Romano tweeted out that the Blues have made a loan with buy option proposal to Atletico Madrid while there is no official bid from Manchester United:

Manchester United and Chelsea have been linked with a move for Saul
Now, it is true that Saul has not been at the top of his game for a while now. He was one of the most important players in this Atletico Madrid team not too long ago but now, it appears that the Spanish giants are very open to the idea of letting him leave.
Even then, a loan move with an option to buy could be fantastic for a player of his potential. It must be pointed out that on top of his game, he was considered as one of the best players in the world in his position.
Thus, if he can rediscover his form elsewhere, it would prove to be a tremendous signing for that club. Now, it remains to be seen how things unfold in the race to sign Saul.
