The Red Devils began their 2021/22 Premier League campaign in brilliant fashion, winning the opening game of their season 5-1 against Leeds United. Not only would the day be memorable for the club’s sensational performance, but also it marked the unveiling of Raphael Varane as a Manchester United player in front of the Old Trafford crowd to an incredible ovation.
The club have signed Varane from Real Madrid this summer. He is expected to come in and form a partnership with Harry Maguire in the heart of the defence. His arrival though could mean fewer playing time for some of the club’s other centre-backs.
Axel Tuanzebe has already left on a season-long loan to Aston Villa. But even then, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has five senior centre-backs to his team from. Other than Maguire and Varane, Victor Lindelof, Eric Bailly and Phil Jones are also at the club.
Jones is someone who has been linked with an Old Trafford exit for a while now. But as reported by the Daily Mail, Jones is in Solskjaer’s plans for the season as one of the five centre-backs.

Jones looks set for a Manchester United stay
Still 29 years of age, Jones moved to the Theatre of Dreams from Blackburn Rovers back in the summer of 2011. Hence, the summer of 2021 marked his 10-year stay at the club.
Once rated at one of the best young defenders in all of football, things have not quite gone his way recently and he played for the club for the first time in 19 months in their recent behind-closed doors friendly against Burnley.
Jones has made 224 appearances for the Red Devils till now, according to stats from Transfermarkt. And it is safe to say that he has had his fair share of injury problems during his time at Old Trafford. Still just 29 though, one can only hope that he can remain fit and contribute to the team moving forward.
