It is safe to say that Paul Pogba put in one of his best performances in a Manchester United shirt, most probably his entire career, as he provided four assists in their Premier League season opener against Leeds United, which ended in a convincing 5-1 win for the Red Devils.

Not many would have been expecting such a sensational performance from the team on the day, especially considering that they were not at full strength. But a hattrick from Bruno Fernandes, and a goal each from Mason Greenwood and Fred saw them get a statement win against Marcelo Bielsa’s side.

On a day filled with superb performances, it was perhaps Pogba’s one that stood out as he was absolutely sensational with the ball at his feet.

Following the game, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer revealed what he told the French World Cup winner to do against Leeds United. The manager told BT Sport (via Express):

"“Today’s message was just about: go out and enjoy yourself. He had 45 minutes against Everton [in pre-season], which which was not his best.“But today we just gave him the freedom overall, to go wherever he wanted to go. We wanted him to get on the ball.“All the best players would want to feel our trust in them, our confidence. And Paul is one of those players who can create something out of nothing.“He looked so strong and I was impressed by his fitness. That’s a good sign.”"

Pogba was absolutely brilliant in Manchester United’s 5-1 win vs Leeds United

There is no questioning that Pogba was sensational against Bielsa’s side as he put up four assists. But one has to wonder if he can continue to perform like this throughout the campaign.

There is no doubt that on the top of his game, he is one of the best midfielders in the world. We have seen glimpses of that during his time at Old Trafford. But he has not quite done it on a consistent basis for the Red Devils yet.

This was a statement win from Solskjaer’s side in their opening game of the 2021/22 Premier League campaign. But if they are to challenge for the title this season, they will need the Frenchman to be in this sort of form throughout the course of the season. Let’s just hope that he keeps on going out and enjoying himself on the pitch.
