The chance to sign a player as great as Lionel Messi comes only once in a lifetime, if even that. And with the Argentine legend leaving FC Barcelona this summer, it looks like Manchester United will at least try to see if they can make the move happen.

Messi was expected to remain at Camp Nou beyond this summer and it looked like the club and the player had even come to an agreement regarding a contract extension.

But FC Barcelona’s official website announced yesterday that Messi won’t be continuing at the club due to the Spanish Liga’s regulations on player registration. As a result, the Argentine’s legendary run at Camp Nou has come to an end.

As reported by Duncan Castles of The Transfer Window Podcast (via The Sun), Manchester United have contacted Messi’s representatives about a potential move to Old Trafford.

Messi might quite possibly be the greatest player in the history of the game. Thus, signing him would always be an attractive option for any club in the world. And this might very well be the last chance for anyone to do so.

At 34 years of age, he is no longer in his prime, but on the pitch he looks as good as ever. In fact, it was this summer that he finally ended his long wait for an international trophy with Argentina by winning the Copa America and he appears to be the favourite in the Ballon d’Or race at the moment.

And it is not just what he brings on the pitch but off it as well. Thus, it is not surprising that the Red Devils are interested in at least exploring the possibility of a move. But at this point of time, Paris Saint-Germain are believed to be the heavy favourites to sign Messi this summer.
