Manchester United have shown some solid progress during the time of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as the club’s manager. Last season, they finished second in the Premier League and as runners up in the Europa League.

But at the end of the day, they could not win a single piece of silverware and have not won a trophy in four seasons now. And it is safe to say that they need to bring an end to that streak as soon as possible.

The club have already made a solid start to the summer transfer window, having agreed a deal with Borussia Dortmund to sign Jadon Sancho and signed Tom Heaton on a free transfer. But it looks like Solskjaer is set to make a massive tactical change as well.

As reported by ESPN, Solskjaer has told players returning to pre-season training that he wants to implement a more attacking 4-3-3 formation this season.

Manchester United could be set to take a more attacking approach next season

It looks like Solskjaer is looking to field a more attacking team moving forward after using the 4-2-3-1 formation previously, with Scott McTominay and Fred sitting in front of the defence in the middle of the park.

You have to wonder what such a change would mean for that partnership. If Solskjaer was to shift to a 4-3-3 formation, you have to feel that he would use one defensive midfielder and a couple of attacking midfielders.

That could allow both Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba, if he stays at Old Trafford beyond this summer, to play attacking midfield roles. But in that case, the club might also have to bring in a defensive midfielder this summer.

Neither Scott McTominay nor Fred are natural defensive midfielders, while Nemanja Matic is set to to turn 33 years of age in the near future. Now, it remains to be seen what Solskjaer decides about the formation moving forward.
