Over the past year or so, a lot of football has been played. As a result, it should not come as a surprise that a lot of injuries have occurred as well. The same appears to have happened with Dean Henderson, who broke into the Manchester United first-team last season and was a part of the England squad for EURO 2020 as well but ultimately had to pull out of the tournament shortly after the game against Croatia.

Henderson was expected to play as the number two to Jordan Pickford at the Euros but was unable to do so due to an injury. It surely must have been a disappointment for the young goalkeeper who has shown tremendous progress over the past couple of years and appears to be ahead of David de Gea in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s pecking order at the moment.

Henderson has shed some light on his injury now and how hard he worked throughout the course of the 2020/21 campaign to get into the Red Devils’ first-team.

Speaking to talkSPORT and as reported by Manchester Evening News, he said:

"“Listen, after last season, it was very difficult for me. I worked every day, day-in and day-out, I was grinding down to get into that team at Man United.“I went through every brick wall I could get through, I fought hard and when I got into the team I was shattered, I was exhausted.“I was mentally tired, I’d done everything right to get into the team, but I’d used up all my energy worrying about getting into the team. So when I got into the team I had a good little run and then got injured and then I struggled.”"

Henderson revealed that he did not want to give up his place in the Euros but he could not dive:

"“I didn’t want to give my place up with the Euros in sight and with what I’d done to get my shirt, so I went into the Euros.“I so wanted to be fit, so I came in with a brave face on, but I couldn’t dive. When I came into training I couldn’t dive, I broke down after a week and I was devastated.”"

Henderson could be Manchester United’s first-choice goalkeeper moving forward

Ultimately, Henderson had to pull out of the England squad. One can only hope that he manages to take care of his injury and is back to full fitness as quickly as possible.

England managed to make it into the final of EURO 2020 before losing to Italy on penalties in heart-breaking fashion. But at the end of the day, the team had a lot of things to be proud of and things to look forward to in the future.

On the other hand, the 24-year-old could very well be Solskjaer’s number one heading into next season as De Gea’s future at Old Trafford remains up in the air. The Spaniard had started the 2020/21 campaign with the first-team gloves in his possession but by the end of the campaign, it had looked like Henderson had managed to move ahead of him in the goalkeeping pecking order.
