Manchester United are expected to strengthen in the heart of their defence over the course of the summer transfer window. Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof have served as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first choice pairing in the recent past.

The duo did quite well last season and formed a formidable partnership at the back. But even then, there is a feeling that that might be an area that the Red Devils can improve in. They conceded 44 goals in the Premier League in the previous campaign, the most of any team in the top four.

As a result, they have been linked with a number of centre-backs over the course of the last few months. Names like Raphael Varane, Sergio Ramos, Jules Kounde, Nikola Milenkovic, Pau Torres, Kalidou Koulibaly and many others have been brought up.

Ben White is one of those players, who has been linked with an Old Trafford move, with many even suggesting that he could be the perfect partner for Maguire. But it looks like Manchester United are set to lose out in the transfer race for the youngster. As reported by The Athletic, Arsenal are moving closer to signing White in a deal around £50 million.

Arsenal look set to win the transfer race for the Manchester United target

White has emerged as one of the most highly-rated centre-backs in English football in recent years. It was on loan at Leeds United, who were in the Championship at that point, that he first caught the eye of the footballing world.

The following season, he established himself as a regular in the Brighton & Hove Albion first-team. And now, it looks like he is set to get a big move to Arsenal this summer.

It has looked like White has been on Manchester United’s radar for a while now. But at this point of time, other centre-backs might very well be higher on Solskjaer’s wish list this summer. The club have been heavily linked with the likes of Varane and Torres in recent weeks.
