Manchester United might very well be looking to sign a new centre-back this summer. While Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof have forged a formidable partnership in the heart of defence, there is a feeling that it is a position where the club can improve further.
Thus, a number of centre-backs have been linked with the Red Devils over the course of the past several months. One of them is Raphael Varane.
The Real Madrid star has been one of the best defenders in the world for years now and won almost everything that there is to win through the course of his career. But with his contract set to run out in the summer of 2022, it looks like he could be departing Santiago Bernabeu in the near future.
As reported by Manchester Evening News, Manchester United made a £50 million transfer bid to sign Varane but Real Madrid are holding out for an £80 million transfer fee.

Varane would be a terrific signing for Manchester United
There is no doubt that Varane is a tremendous player. But he will bring a lot more to the table than just his individual skills.
The Frenchman is a serial winner. He has won the World Cup as well as multiple Champions League and league titles. And the Red Devils could certainly do with a player who has that kind of experience.
The club have been linked with Varane for a long time now, even as far back as when Sir Alex Ferguson was the manager. And you would have to feel that this summer provides the best opportunity for them to make the move finally happen. His contract with Real Madrid will run out next summer and as a result, the La Liga giants are expected to try and find him a new club this summer rather than see him walk out as a free agent a year later.
Signing Varane won’t be easy though. It is not only about the transfer fee but also the fact that a number of clubs are expected to be interested in him as well.
