Manchester United ended the 2020-21 season on a low note as they were defeated by Villarreal in the Europa League final. This marked yet another season for the Red Devils without any trophies coming back to Old Trafford.
Following the defeat, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is expected to make some changes in the squad over the course of the summer. For starters, he might be keen on adding more options up front at striker.
Edinson Cavani rose to the occasion in the second half of the season, but the 34-year-old is not a long-term solution for the club. The Red Devils need someone who can help the team win trophies for the foreseeable future.
Keeping that in mind, they have been linked with Borussia Dortmund superstar Erling Haaland for quite some time. The Red Devils were believed to be one of the clubs interested in landing his signature this summer.

Manchester United should target Harry Kane after Erling Haaland blow
The Bundesliga giants are believed to be looking for a transfer fee around £150 million if they are to let Haaland leave this summer although it does look like they want to keep the Norwegian striker at the club. Some rumours suggest that the transfer fee could reach as high as £170 million.
Also, as reported by the Daily Mail, Chelsea have opened talks for Haaland. The Champions League winners seem keen to sign the Norwegian and appear to be in a better position than most other clubs to make the move happen although it will still be very difficult to pull off.
In this scenario, the best alternative for Manchester United is to target Harry Kane. The English captain could very well leave Tottenham Hotspur this summer.
According to stats from Transfermarkt, the 27-year-old made 49 appearances last season, scoring 33 goals and providing 17 assists as well. And there is no doubt that he is one of the best strikers in the history of the Premier League already.
But Kane’s transfer fee is expected to be well over £100 million too. Thus, it will be very difficult to make that move happen also, especially if the Red Devils are successful in signing Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund.
