With the UEFA Europa League final defeat last Wednesday, Manchester United have failed to win a trophy in the past four seasons. In what was a close contest against Villarreal, the game was decided by penalties.
However, it is safe to say that the Red Devils were the favourites going into the game. Considering the star-studded squad, ending their trophy drought on the night didn’t feel like a far-fetched dream, to be honest.
One area that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer might very well be looking to make improvements in over the summer is at the heart of defence.
In the final, Harry Maguire was sidelined due to an injury and in his place Eric Bailly paired up with Victor Lindelof. Although the two players held their own, it feels like the club could do with some more options in the position.

Raphael Varane, Pau Torres and Nikola Milenkovic are options Manchester United should consider
Raphael Varane has enjoyed a great spell with Real Madrid for the last decade. He has won a number of trophies and given fans many memorable moments. But with only one year left on his contract, he could be on his way out of the club in the near future.
While Varane might be the biggest target for the Red Devils, there are two more players who could prove to be interesting options – Villarreal’s Pau Torres and Fiorentina’s Nikola Milenkovic.
As reported by Manchester Evening News, it looks like the Red Devils will have the chance to sign the Villarreal star if all three parties involved are able reach an agreement.
Torres put on a show in Villarreal’s historic victory over Manchester United in the Europa League final, which must have impressed Solskjaer.
Lastly, Serbian defender Milenkovic could also be an excellent defensive partner for Maguire. He has been brilliant in recent seasons while playing for Fiorentina. And the fact that he could be available for a transfer fee around €30 million to €35 million might make him even more attractive in the eyes of the Red Devils.
