While the season might have been a good one overall, it goes without saying that Manchester United must have been heavily disappointed after missing out on the Europa League after a defeat in the final at the hands of Villarreal.

It was not the best performance on the night from the Red Devils and the game headed to penalties after a 1-1 draw over 120 minutes of football. Then, David de Gea ended up being the only one of the 22 players on the pitch to miss a spot kick as things ended 11-10 in the penalty shootout.

This was the team’s chance to win their first piece of silverware under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer but they could not take it. In fact, the performance from the team as well as the manager left a lot to be desired.

But now, the focus should turn towards the upcoming summer transfer window with the aim of improving even further come next season. They are expected to strengthen in a number of positions and centre-back is believed to be one of them. And have they found their prime centre-back target after the defeat at the hands of Villarreal?

Manchester United have been linked with Pau Torres in the recent past

As reported by Manchester Evening News leading up to the Europa League final, Manchester United were believed to be viewing the game as the last ‘audition’ for Pau Torres before they made their decision on a prime centre-back target.

If that was the case then Torres must have passed with flying colours. The Spanish international was brilliant on the night and must have impressed everyone watching with his performance in what was arguably the biggest game of his career till now.

According to stats from Transfermarkt, Torres has made 44 appearances this season and established himself as one of the best defenders in La Liga at this point of time. He has been linked with Real Madrid as well and signing a player of his quality would be seen as a major coup on the part of Manchester United, if they were able to get a deal over the line.
