There is a lot of excitement surrounding AS Roma’s future at the moment with Jose Mourinho set to become their manager come next season. But could that have an effect on Manchester United?

The Portuguese manager is expected to try and sign some of his former stars, and as a result, AS Roma have already been linked with a number of players currently at Old Trafford. One of them is Nemanja Matic.

Mourinho has worked with Matic at two clubs already, Manchester United and Chelsea, and could be looking to make AS Roma the third.

As reported by Gazzetta dello Sport (via Sport Witness), the Serbian midfielder is currently rated at around €10 million and is believed to open to a move to AS Roma in order to reunited with Mourinho, who he is said to have a ‘special relationship’ with.

Could Matic be set to leave Manchester United to reunite with Mourinho at AS Roma?

Matic is no longer a first-team star at Old Trafford and serves as a back-up option to Fred and Scott McTominay, who have been Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first choice in the midfield two this season. But he remains an important member of the squad, with not much depth in defensive midfield beyond him.

At 32 years of age though, he might very well want to play more regular football than he is doing at the moment. According to stats from Transfermarkt, he has featured for just 1906 minutes of football this season.

If the Red Devils were able to sign a defensive midfielder in the upcoming summer transfer window, it is very possible that they could be open to the idea of Matic leaving for AS Roma. But as things stand, it feels unlikely that they will let the Serbian leave without much depth in defensive midfield right now.
