The upcoming summer transfer is going to be interesting for Manchester United. With a top four spot secured already and it looking likely that they will finish the season in second, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be eager to close the gap between them and champions Manchester City come next season.

For that to happen, the club must strengthen further in a number of areas though as there are still a few steps to take before they can compete with Pep Guardiola’s side on a consistent basis.

Signing a centre-back is believed to be one of the priorities for the Norwegian boss this summer. And that being said, there is no shortage of promising targets.

The likes of Raphaël Varane, Jules Kounde, Nikola Milenkovic and Sven Botman have been continuously linked with a summer move to Old Trafford over the past few months. And the list keeps getting longer.

Manchester United reportedly interested in Cristian Romero

As reported by Sky Sports, Manchester United are keen on Cristian Romero. On a two-season loan from Juventus, Romero has been in excellent form through the course of this campaign, playing 40 matches, according to stats from Transfermarkt, across all competitions for Atalanta.

Atalanta have a £21.5 million (€25 million) buy clause in the loan deal but it is believed that after triggering the buy clause and making his stay permanent in the future, the Italian side could be open to letting him leave for a transfer fee in the region of £34 million (€40 million).

It is not hard to see why Romero is so highly rated. He is a solid tackler and brilliant at intercepting the ball as well.

At 23 years of age, the Argentine is an exciting prospect and could very well be the man to partner Harry Maguire at the heart of the Red Devils’ defence next season, if they are able to sign him.
