Manchester United are expected to make a couple of moves in the upcoming summer transfer window. There is no question that the team has made some tremendous progress under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer over the past year or so, currently sitting at second in the Premier League table and in the final of the Europa League.

But the ultimate aim of the club would be to return to the top of English football and challenge for the Champions League on a consistent basis. In that regard, they are still a few steps away and need to strengthen in the summer, in a few positions.

One of these positions is believed to be centre-back. While Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof have managed to form a formidable partnership at the heart of defence, there has always been the feeling that this is an area where the squad can improve further.

As reported by the Mirror, Manchester United are set to make a £40 million transfer bid for Raphael Varane this summer.

Can Manchester United sign Varane this summer?

There is no question that Varane is one of the best defenders in the world right now. But his contract with Real Madrid runs till the summer of 2022. And if they are not able to agree a new deal with him in the near future, then they might very well have no choice but to let him leave this summer. Otherwise, he will become a free agent a season later.

Some rumours suggest that Varane is looking for a new challenge and as a result, Manchester United feel that they can land him for a transfer fee of around £40 million. Now, it remains to be seen if they can actually pull it off.

If the Red Devils are indeed able to sign someone of the quality of Varane, it would be seen as a major coup on the part of the club and would most probably transform them into title contenders for next season.
