Manchester United are expected to make a number of signings in the upcoming summer transfer window. There are a few positions in the squad which need strengthening. But goalkeeper is not one of them.

Yet, it looks like the Red Devils could have a very different looking goalkeeping unit come next season. Sergio Romero looks set to leave the club along with the likes of Joel Pereira, Paul Woolston and Lee Grant.

The future of David de Gea also appears to be up in the air. The Spaniard has fallen behind Dean Henderson in the pecking order in the last few months. And if he is not the first choice by the end of the season, there is the possibility that the club’s long-time goalkeeper could look for an Old Trafford exit.

As a result, it looks likely that the Red Devils will sign new goalkeepers in the upcoming transfer window. And one of them appears to be close. As reported by The Telegraph (via The Sun), Manchester United are close to signing Tom Heaton on a free transfer.

Manchester United appear to be close to a free transfer for Heaton

Heaton came through the Red Devils’ youth ranks. But he never managed to make a single appearance for the first-team.

After several loan spells away from Old Trafford, he decided to join Cardiff City on a free transfer back in 2010. Since then, he has forged himself a good career, representing the likes of Bristol City, Burnley and Aston Villa as well.

With his contract at Aston Villa set to run out this summer, it is not hard to see why the Red Devils would be interested in a reunion with the player. He is a proven goalkeeper who can be a great backup option for the club. And at 35 years of age, it will be the chance for Heaton to finally prove himself at Old Trafford, if the move does take place.
