One of the positions that Manchester United might look to make reinforcements in in the upcoming summer transfer window is centre-back.

The duo of Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof have performed well in recent times but there is a feeling that the club can improve even further at the heart of defence. On top of that, Eric Bailly, Phil Jones and Axel Tuanzebe have been linked with moves away from the club in recent times as well.

Thus, signing a new centre-back could prove to be important for the Red Devils. And Wesley Fofana is someone who appears to have caught the eye of the club.

As reported by Foot Mercato, Manchester United have initiated contact for Fofana. But it is believed that they might need to shell out a transfer fee similar to the one they shelled out to sign Harry Maguire back in 2019.

Manchester United might need to sign a new defender in the summer

Fofana has been very impressive ever since joining Leicester City last summer from Saint-Etienne for a transfer fee believed to be around £36.5 million.

Still just 20 years of age, he is only set to get better from here on and if he continues to develop at this pace, he could be one of the best defenders on the planet in the near future.

Thus, it is not hard to see why the Red Devils might be interested in the French centre-back and he could prove to be a brilliant signing for the club. But the big question is, can they make a deal happen?

With his current contract at Leicester City running till the summer of 2025, they would be in no hurry to part ways with Fofana. And shelling out a transfer fee in the region of £80 million, in the middle of a global pandemic, could prove to be very difficult for the club, especially when there are reinforcements needed to be made in other positions as well.
