Manchester United have done quite well defensively over the past several months. In fact, most of their struggles recently have been on the other end of the pitch while the defence has managed to keep clean sheets on a consistent basis.
But despite that, there is the general feeling that the club can improve in the heart of defence and could try to sign a new centre-back in the upcoming summer transfer window. As a result, a number of defenders have been linked with the Red Devils over the past several months.
One man who has been linked with a switch to Old Trafford continuously for quite some time now is Villarreal’s Pau Torres. The defender has emerged as one of the best centre-backs in La Liga over the last couple of seasons.
According to AS and as reported by Metro, Manchester United consider him as the ‘first option’ and have made him a ‘priority transfer’.

Torres could be a brilliant signing for Manchester United
It is safe to say that Torres is one of the most highly-rated centre-backs in world football right now. He has already made 7 appearances for the Spanish national team.
Also, he could be a great fit in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s current set up because he is left footed. Of course, the addition of the 24-year-old at the heart of defence alongside Maguire would open up more options tactically for the Red Devils.
It remains to be seen whether they can get a deal over the line for him though. He is also reportedly wanted by Real Madrid and is believed to have a release clause around €65 million in his current contract with Villarreal.
Signing a centre-back could prove to be important for the Red Devils in the summer, as the likes of Eric Bailly, Phil Jones and Axel Tuanzebe have all been linked with moves away in recent months.
