Manchester United are believed to have had tried to sign Thomas Muller from Bayern Munich in 2015. Louis van Gaal was in charge of the Red Devils back then.

It had been two years since Sir Alex Ferguson had retired. And following the departure of David Moyes, the task of taking United back to the top of English football was on the Dutchman’s shoulders.

Muller was someone he was reportedly interested in signing during his second summer as the Manchester United manager. But ultimately, a deal failed to materialise and the German remained at Bayern Munich.

Instead, the Red Devils went on to sign Memphis Depay from PSV Eindhoven and a then teenage Anthony Martial from AS Monaco.

Muller told The Athletic, as reported by the Daily Star, that he could imagine joining Manchester United back then:

"“I could imagine going to Man Utd then.“But the club said: ‘We want you to stay’.“I wasn’t out of contract, that’s why I it was pretty clear-cut in the end.“But it wasn’t just a poker game.”"

Could Manchester United still make a move for Muller?

As reported by The Times (via Tribal Football), Muller made no secret of his love for Bayern Munich but he did not rule out the chances of him playing for a different club in the future either. He said:

"“But when there is a situation where you have to decide maybe to play for a different club, it would be no shame and no problem at all.“Maybe like with Thiago (Alcantara at Liverpool ).”"

The comments have led to speculation that a future move to the Premier League could be on the cards for the World Cup winner and put Manchester United on red alert, as reported by the Daily Star

Despite being 31 years of his age, Muller is still producing an incredible output. According to stats from Transfermarkt, he has 14 goals and 19 assists to his name this season across all competitions.

With Edinson Cavani being linked with an exit in the near future, could the Red Devils try to make a move for Muller if he was indeed available? There is no doubt that he is still a brilliant player and could add a lot of quality to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team. But what would such an addition mean for someone like Mason Greenwood?
