Manchester United are expected to strengthen in the upcoming summer transfer window as they aim to return to the top of English football once again.

Undeniably, they have made some spectacular progress over the past year or so and are now sitting at second in the Premier League table. But it does feel like the club need to take one more step if they are to compete with the likes of Manchester City for titles on a consistent basis. That step could involve signing a new striker in the summer.

Goals have been hard to come by for the Red Devils in recent months. And one of the main reasons for that has been the struggles of their players up front.

As a result, it would not be a surprise to see the club go after a striker in the summer. And despite the recent links with Harry Kane, Paul Scholes believes that that man should be Erling Haaland. While speaking on the Webby & O’Neill channel on YouTube and as reported by Metro, the Manchester United legend said:

"‘He’s [Haaland] the best striker out there in the world, without a shadow of a doubt. it’s ridiculous what he’s doing.‘If you sign him now you’ll get 10 years of him.‘With Harry Kane, at 28, 29, he’s in the peak of his career but you’re talking two or three years as a top-class striker.‘When you get to 31, 32, you probably lose your legs a little bit, start to drop deep as he’s started to do a little bit now actually.‘As for Haaland he’s going to cost a lot more money, they’re both going to cost a lot of money, but I think if you’re looking to the future in the next few years Haaland has to be the one.’"

Can Manchester United sign Haaland?

Anthony Martial has failed to find the back of the net on a consistent basis, while Edinson Cavani has had to deal with injury issues which have kept him on the sidelines. And the Uruguayan has been linked with a move away at the end of the season as well.

When it comes to Haaland, can they get it done? That will be the big question at this point of time, with Manchester City, Chelsea, Liverpool, FC Barcelona and Real Madrid all being linked with the Norwegian superstar.

There is no doubt that he is a spectacular player and could very well end up competing for the Ballon d’Or in the not too distant future if he continues to develop at the speed that he has till now. But it will be very difficult to sign him with the amount of competition for his signature.
