Competition for places
In order to win the Premier League, a team needs a lot of squad depth. Something that the Red Devils do not have a lot of at the moment, especially when you compare them with a team like Manchester City, who look likely to lift the title this season.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer also appears to be a firm believer in competition for places. Just look how signing Alex Telles has helped Luke Shaw transform into one of the best left-backs in the league.
The signings of Donny van de Beek and Edinson Cavani were also completed with the same aim in mind – to provide competition for places and to add squad depth.
If David de Gea leaves for PSG next summer, Manchester United, Dean Henderson would be the undisputed starter at the club. Signing Donnarumma could provide him with the competition that every player needs to improve though. Of course, it does come with the risk of unsettling a player as well.
In terms of experience, Donnarumma is ahead of the young Englishman, with the Italian keeping 83 clean sheets from 241 appearances for AC Milan according to stats from Transfermarkt. He has also made 24 appearances for the Italy national team.
