Despite an encouraging season in which they have shown a lot of progress, it is possible that Manchester United could end this campaign without a trophy.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side crashed out of the FA Cup after being handed a 3-1 defeat by Leicester City in the quarter-finals. And now, it looks like the Europa League might be their only chance of winning a trophy this season, with Manchester City in a commanding lead at the top of Premier League table despite suffering a 2-0 defeat against the Red Devils just a couple of weeks ago.

As a result, the club are expected to strengthen in the summer transfer window as the ultimate aim will be to get back to winning titles on a consistent basis once again.

One club whose players they have been constantly linked with recently is Borussia Dortmund. While Erling Haaland and Jadon Sancho have grabbed most of the headlines, Manuel Akanji is reportedly another player that they are interested in signing. And his comments from back in 2018 do suggest that he could be open to an Old Trafford switch as well. As reported by ESPN, the defender told NZZ:

"“Since my childhood days Manchester United have been my favourite club. I’d like to play there one day.”"

Akanji would be a good signing for Manchester United

The Swiss international has been impressive during his time at Borussia Dortmund, who he joined back in 2018. And with Manchester United expected to sign a centre-back in the summer, could he be the answer to their worries at the back?

It was widely believed that the club could be looking to sign a centre-back partner for Harry Maguire. But the impressive form of Victor Lindelof could have led to changing those plans. As a result, it would be interesting to see whether the club do end up going after a defender in the summer. But if they do, Akanji should be someone that they consider.

Other than the Borussia Dortmund star, they have been linked with the likes of Jules Kounde, Nikola Milenkovic, Gianluca Mancini, Raphael Varane, Sergio Ramos and many others.
