It is undeniable that not many people would have expected Manchester United to sit at second at this stage of the campaign. And while the progress under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been very promising, that does not mean that things are perfect at Old Trafford.

One of the key areas that the Red Devils must improve in is their defence. While they have managed to keep clean sheets on a consistent basis recently, the system required to do so has had an effect on their output on the other end of the pitch.

Harry Maguire is the undisputed starter under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, and he has been paired with either Victor Lindelof or Eric Bailly in the heart of defence this season. But there is the feeling that the centre-back pairing could be better.

With that aim in sight, United might be forced to dip into the transfer market. According to The Transfer Window Podcast and as reported by the Mirror, Maguire has requested Solskjaer to sign Ben White to play alongside him at the back.

White could be a terrific signing for Manchester United

The 23-year-old is one of the most highly rated English centre-backs in the Premier League right now. After making a name for himself while away on loan at Leeds United, he is back with Brighton & Hove Albion this season and has made 29 appearances in all competitions for them already.

He has a contract with The Seagulls till the summer of 2024 and it is believed that he is valued at around £50 million by them. But you would have to think that he could end up being available for a transfer fee lesser than that if they end up getting relegated from the Premier League this season.

His style of play could certainly compliment that of Maguire. Thus, it is not hard to see why the Manchester United captain would want a player like him at Old Trafford.
