Manchester United have done better than most would have expected them to do at the start of this season. As things stand, they currently sit at second in the Premier League table, behind only Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City.

And although it is likely that they won’t win the title this season, the improvement that the side have shown under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has certainly been impressive.

That does not mean that everything has been perfect though, far from it. One of the main areas of weakness this season has been upfront and the club have struggled to find the back of the net recently.

In this respect, Anthony Martial has been the biggest worry. After a 23-goal season last time around, he has failed to match those heights and till now only has 7 goals to his name this season. And Ray Parlour has not been impressed with the Frenchman. As reported by Metro, he said on talkSPORT:

"‘I don’t know if he’s the sort of player when he’s left out his confidence levels go really down, I don’t see him on a day-to-day basis.‘But it just hasn’t worked for him as a striker for Manchester United.‘Consistency is so important in football. If you’re going to be at the top of your game, you’ve got to make sure you’re consistent week in week out, put in performances week in week out.‘He doesn’t do that, for me. He can have a 9 out of 10 and then suddenly he’s got two 4 out of 10s.’"

Martial needs to improve if Manchester United are to challenge for titles

At this point of time, it is safe to say that Anthony Martial is the main striker at Manchester United. The club do have Edinson Cavani in their ranks as well, but the Uruguayan has had his injury issues recently and has been linked with a move away from the club also.

Thus, the best case scenario right now would be for Martial to rediscover his form. On the top of his game, there is no doubt that the Frenchman is a great player. Unfortunately, he has not been at his best for most part of this season.

But it still might be too early to give up on Martial completely. We have to remember, it was just last season that he had scored 23 goals and was being viewed as a long-term solution at striker for a new look Manchester United attack.
