Coming into Sunday’s game, Manchester City were the clear favourites. They were on an incredible 21-match winning streak and had a 14-point lead at the top of the Premier League. Manchester United, on the other hand, were coming off of three straight goalless draws.

The game painted a completely different picture though. Goals from Bruno Fernandes and Luke Shaw, early in each half, were enough to hand Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side all three points and keep their title hopes alive.

Now, with 10 games left to be played in the league, Manchester City have a formidable 11-point lead. As a result, they can guarantee themselves the title with 20 points from a possible 30, no matter what the Red Devils do in their remaining games.

Guardiola has admitted though that there is still a chance that Solskjaer’s side could win the Premier League title this season. As reported by Sky Sports, the manager said:

"“Yeah, of course. When the option is open anything can happen in football.“Nobody thought we could win 21 games in a row or 15 games in the Premier League, so anything can happen. I absolutely agree.“For people like United, they can do it. We have 10 games left and we’ll have to win six or seven games to be champions mathematically.”"

Manchester United winning the title is improbable but not impossible

It is hard to think that Manchester City will not win the title from here on, after having a commanding 11-point lead going into the last 10 games of the league season.

But, stranger things have happened in the past. And United fans would be hoping that the defeat on Sunday ends up turning the momentum in their favour.

Ultimately, it is not in the Red Devils’ hands anymore and they will have to depend on results elsewhere. The only thing that they can do though is win their remaining games in hand and hope that their crosstown rivals drop points.

And they cannot afford to get carried away with things either. While a huge result, every win counts as three points. Thus, Manchester United will have to make sure that they do not drop points themselves or they could end up in the middle of a top four battle.
