Manchester United are expected to go after a new centre-back in the upcoming summer transfer window. Defence has been an area of weakness for the club for quite some time now and their issues at the back have cost them valuable points this season.

The club will probably dip into the transfer market to find Harry Maguire a partner at the heart of defence. And one name that has been making the rounds for quite some time now is that of Fiorentina’s Nikola Milenkovic.

The Serbian defender has been linked with a switch to Old Trafford since back when Jose Mourinho was the Manchester United manager but the move has never quite materialised, yet. But with his contract running out in the summer of 2022, this might be perfect time to test Fiorentina’s resolve with a bid.

According to Constantin Eckner, the club have held talks with his camp already:

Manchester United will face stiff competition for Milenkovic’s signature

While it is still possible that he could sign a new contract with Fiorentina, it looks likely that he will be on the move in the summer and is believed to be available for £30 million, which can be considered a bargain in the present transfer market.

They won’t be without competition though when it comes to signing the Serbian centre-back. As reported by Italian daily La Nazione (via Inside Futbol), Tottenham Hotspur are also in the race for his signature. While the names of Borussia Dortmund and AC Milan have been linked with him in the past as well.

Thus, the Red Devils will need to move quickly and efficiently to get a deal over the line for Milenkovic. At 23 years of age, he already has a lot of top level experience and his a full international. Thus, he very well might end up being the answer to United’s issues at the back.
