Competition for places is always tough at a club the size of Manchester United. But even then, it is never normally as tough as the one between David de Gea and Dean Henderson for the place between the sticks at Old Trafford.

De Gea has been the man with the gloves for almost a decade now and at this point, it would not be wrong to term him as a club legend. He has been one of the shining lights in what has been a rough period in the club’s history. But over the past couple of seasons, his performances have dropped quite a bit.

On the other hand, Dean Henderson has returned from a very successful loan spell at Sheffield United, where he established himself as one of the best keepers in the Premier League. But at Old Trafford, he has had to be satisfied with the odd start here and there, as the Spaniard remains Solskjaer’s first choice.

As reported by The Sun, this prompted him to hold discussions with the manager and in a meeting, Solskjaer told him that only one of them will remain at the club next season, meaning either Henderson or De Gea will be leaving on loan or perhaps even a permanent move.

Who should Manchester United pick between the two?

There are pros and cons to both of them to be honest. On one hand, De Gea is a proven goalkeeper who is going through a bad phase at the moment. But at 30, he still has years of top level football left in the tank.

On the other hand, Henderson might have age on his side but he has not yet proved himself at a club of this size. And he will need to do that before the end of this season if he wants to move ahead of the Spaniard in Solskjaer’s pecking order.

Whoever the club end up choosing, it looks like there will be some clarity over the situation come the end of the season. And hopefully, it will push both of them to play the best football of their careers over the next few months in order to make the starting position their own.
