Manchester United have made a splendid start to this season and they continue to squeeze out wins in tough games. Last night was the perfect example of that when they managed to come out with an extra-time 1-0 win over West Ham United in the fifth round of the FA Cup.

More importantly, they are in the middle of the Premier League title race. While their recent results might not have been very impressive, if there is one thing that this season has shown us, it is that things can change very quickly. Thus, Manchester City’s lead at the top of the table is not secure by any stretch of the imagination.

It is undeniable though that there is still a lot of scope for this squad to improve even further. And while the midfield duo of Fred and Scott McTominay has been very good through the course of the campaign, Trevor Sinclair believes that they could do better.

While McTominay might have got the winner last night, the pundit believes that Declan Rice is a better player than both him and Fred. As reported by the Express, he said:

"“[Tomas] Soucek and Rice keep McTominay out of the West Ham side, whereas Rice walks into the Manchester United side.“If that’s a big fish in a small pond then I don’t quite know what you’re talking about, Simon.“Rice goes alongside McTominay [at Man United]. For me, he’s better than Fred and when you look at McTominay going into the West Ham side, he’s not going to play in one of the forward midfield positions.“Soucek is the top scorer at the football club and there’s an argument that Rice is better than McTominay. So for me, your argument’s dead.“Both teams play a 4-2-3-1 so I think the two holding midfielders at West Ham, Soucek and Rice, stay but I think if Rice goes to Manchester United he takes the position of either McTominay or Fred.”"

Declan Rice could be a superstar at Manchester United

Is Rice really better than Fred or McTominay? That is certainly debatable. But he is indeed one of the most highly-rated English midfielders right now and a player that Manchester United could do with.

West Ham United appear to have valued him at around £80 million in the past but it looks like that valuation has gone down to £50 million in the background of the global pandemic. And for that price, it might make sense for the Red Devils to make a move for the midfielder in the upcoming summer transfer window.

Chelsea were believed to have been interested in him but after the departure of Frank Lampard as manager, United might have a open run at Rice if they wanted to sign him.
