The 2020-21 Premier League campaign has started to look very similar to the 2017-18 one, especially identical from Manchester United’s perspective. Just as it happened that season, Manchester City have started to cement their position at the top of the table. On the other hand, their city rivals have begun to loosen their grip on what once might have been looking like an ambitious title charge.

If you compare the tables, everything looks the same, apart from one aspect. In that campaign, Manchester United, under the supervision of Jose Mourinho, had the second strongest defence in the league. This time, the equation is totally different.

United keep scoring in abundance but their recent Premier League game against Everton is the biggest example of how the defence can hold them back at times. As shown in the 3-3 draw at Old Trafford, Manchester United lack both stability and consistency at the back, which cost them two vital points on the night.

From the lack of pace between the centre-back pairing of Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof getting exploited by the Merseysiders to the United captain playing everybody onside during Everton’s third goal, it was a shambolic night from defensive perspective.

Manchester United handed Dayot Upamecano blow

After signing no senior centre-back throughout the last two transfer windows, Manchester United might finally be looking to land a gigantic name next summer. And fans are no strangers to the rumours of their beloved side being interested in Dayot Upamecano. The 22-year-old defender is expected to leave RB Leipzig next summer.

However, German transfer guru Christian Falk believes that the Red Devils have “no more chance” of signing Upamecano. Bayern Munich, Liverpool and Chelsea are thought to be the clubs running at the front of the queue. As reported by the journalist, the Frenchman will decide his future destination very soon.

If true, this will be a massive blow for the Red Devils as Solskjaer has always been portrayed as a huge admirer of the centre-back. Looking at it the other way, the club will now have a chance to look at the alternatives.

Some even bigger names such as Raphaël Varane and Sergio Ramos have already been mentioned with a possible summer move to Manchester United. So things could get very interesting even if the Upamecano does end up moving to Old Trafford.
