Being a manager of a football team is a results driven job and if you’re not getting the results, you likely won’t be around long. This will be something the now retired Wayne Rooney will have to do, and that’s provide consistent results at Derby County.
He’s not been handed the reigns of a top flight team, or a team in great form, but he’s been given the opportunity to put his name on the map, much like Frank Lampard did when he managed The Rams.
Rooney will have to forge his own path if he wants to become as great a manager as he was a player. He will need to show the footballing world what he brings to the table as a manager.
There were many reasons why teammates and managers thought so highly of Rooney, and this is why he was given the captaincy with both club and country. He will have to translate his playing style and his eye for the game into a coaching role and mould players to fit his vision.
Can Rooney be a success in management?
Rooney, even though a striker, had an eye for the game, which is why he was able to play as a midfielder later on in his career. And this versatility should serve him well in his new role.
While he has no top level coaching experience, you have to start somewhere. Rooney has had some of the best mentors throughout his career that he was able to look toward and follow their lead. He has played under both Sir Alex Ferguson and Jose Mourinho, two of the most accomplished managers in history.

There is no doubt that Rooney will take a lot of what he learnt from them, especially Sir Alex. He was the one who plucked him from Everton as a 18-year-old and helped mould him into one of the world’s best players. And if he wants to have success as a manager he would be wise to use some of the teachings he got from Ferguson.
Starting with Derby County, getting his feet wet and possibly taking them to the Premier League is a great opportunity for Rooney. If he is able to do this, then his status as one of the world’s up and coming managers will in no doubt be set.
While being a great player doesn’t always translate into success in management, let’s hope that it is a different story when it comes to the former Manchester United captain.
Rooney will hopefully become a great manager because he has all the tools to be one of the best. He has had the opportunity to learn from some of the best in history and was a leader of men as well, which not every player-turned-manager can claim. Anything can happen in football, so do not be surprised if he is back in the Old Trafford dugout one day.
