Choosing to put this goal in second was a difficult decision. A derby goal means the world no matter what but an incredibly executed bicycle-kick in a derby? That’s what dreams are made of!

It came after many had thought Rooney was on his way out of the club, but this goal proved that no matter the saga, he was a Red through and through. The cross came in from Luis Nani on the right-hand side, just outside the 18-yard box and Rooney did what he did best, got the ball on target and out of reach of the goalkeeper, which was Joe Hart on this occasion. It was impossible to save.

This era was arguably the first time Rooney was the sole star of a United team and the confidence this gave him was there for all to see. Perhaps that is what inspired him to try something so audacious, so outlandish in one of the biggest games of the season, against a team who were on the up and looking to cause disruption to the Red Devils’ grasp on the league.

It came off on the day. It was beautiful. And unforgettable!
