Wayne Rooney’s Top 5 Goals for Manchester United
By Anna Dugdale
As Wayne Rooney’s illustrious playing career draws to an end and his managerial career begins, here are his best goals in a Manchester United shirt.
The time has come, one of Manchester United’s all-time greats has retired from football. Wayne Rooney has decided to hang up his boots at Derby County and is beginning his managerial career there. Time has flown and his achievements speak for themselves, winning 12 major honours with the Red Devils, including five Premier Leagues and one Champions League.
He is an absolute legend of the game and will go down as one of the greatest to ever play at Old Trafford. And those of us who had the honour of watching him live will always cherish those memories.
Here are our 5 favourites that Rooney scored for Manchester United:
5. Counter-attacking beauty vs Bolton Wanderers in 2006/07
Scored in one of United’s most successful and pleasing to watch eras, this counterattack involved Rooney, Cristiano Ronaldo and Ryan Giggs. It was end-to-end football and ended with the Englishman slightly chipping the goalkeeper.
The move made every single player involved look good, which is something Rooney did best. The move started and ended with him. His deft flick just outside his own team’s box onto Cristiano Ronaldo, who in turn used his pace to get the ball up the field, ending the move with a subtle chip over the goalkeeper.
Arguably, he spent a large majority of his career making other players look good and contributing to everyone else’s goal tallies. This era of Rooney’s playing career at Old Trafford was one of the best to watch, he latched onto every loose ball and started a ferocious attack on the opposing team’s defence. The quality that oozed from him was intangible, it lacks description. Despite every criticism people had of him, he always worked hard and was prepared to bomb up and down the pitch at the drop of a hat.
