Paul Scholes has told Manchester United to sign the young prospect from Leicester City in order to succeed against the big teams.

The last time Manchester United signed someone from Leicester City was back in the summer of 2019. Paying a world-record transfer fee of £80 million, the Red Devils signed up Harry Maguire from the Foxes, making the Englishman the most expensive defender in defender.

Although the record of him being the most expensive defender is still intact, he is not thought to be someone capable of transforming the United defence on his own. The general belief is that the Red Devils need a perfect companion for Maguire.

Starving for some success under their reign of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Manchester United are looking robust in their ambition for the Premier League title this season. While the team’s attack is proving to be too hot to handle and might be ample to win the side a league title, the defence seems to be a point of concern for the manager.

From 17 matches, United have had conceded 24 goals – as many as the 18th-placed Fulham. The recent introduction of Eric Bailly, however, has provided them with some solidity at the back. At least fans love Bailly’s nonchalant marching around the 18-yard box and believe in his no-nonsense defending.

Unlike Victor Lindelof, Bailly offers great pace to cover for Maguire’s lack of swiftness. But as you might know, the fear of an impending injury always looms over his shoulder. And his past injury record is very concerning.

Focusing on this matter while speaking to ESPN, Manchester United legend Paul Scholes urged them to sign Wesley Fofana from Leicester City as soon as possible.

Scholes said:

"‘When we won titles, so many of our wins at Liverpool were 1-0 or 2-1 after having to dig it out for 80 minutes.‘You accept you’re going to have days like that against the top teams, when you don’t dominate the game and have to battle to stay in it.‘You have to be able to defend properly and withstand the opposition’s attacks, but I’m still to be convinced that this United side can do that.’"

He continued:

"‘As a back-four, I worry about how good they really are. At full-back, Aaron Wan-Bissaka is just about defending, which is fine for a game at Liverpool, but I’m not sure what Luke Shaw brings to the team.‘In the middle, Ole still has to find Harry Maguire’s best partner. Eric Bailly has pace, but he is rash and picks up too many injuries.‘Victor Lindelof plays the position better and seems to be Ole’s preferred option, but again, he is not totally convincing.‘If I was Ole and could sign a defender this month, I’d go for Wesley Fofana at Leicester.‘He’s only 20, but he has been outstanding and he has the potential to be anything he wants to be.‘United have done OK at the back this season, but they have been exposed when playing against the big teams and that’s another problem they need to solve.’"

Fofana, 20, joined Leicester City from Ligue 1 side Saint-Etienne for a reported transfer fee of £36.5 million last summer. Although the transfer fee seemed steep initially, the French U23 defender has totally justified the price tag.

Having played 12 matches in the Premier League this season, he has four clean-sheets to his name. Proving to be a solid acquisition at the defence for Leicester City, Fofana could restrain himself from making another move this early in his professional career. But he is one elite clubs around the world could keep an eye on for the future.
