Manchester United want to sign Wan-Bissaka’s challenger in January
Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is reportedly interested in signing the Championship standout in January.
To replace a long-term servant in Antonio Valencia at right-back, Manchester United signed Aaron Wan-Bissaka from Crystal Palace for £50 million in 2019. And the youngster soon won over the Manchester United fans with his flamboyant tackling and defensive abilities.
It certainly seemed to be a great move for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side, one that would serve the club for the foreseeable future. But as the pressure started to creep in and fixtures began to come thick and fast, the vulnerabilities that lie in his game became more and more apparent by the end of the 2019-20 campaign.
In his first season at Old Trafford, Wan-Bissaka made 35 Premier League appearances, garnering four assists in total. Defensively, he proved to be a brick wall. However, despite the four league assists, his attacking ability didn’t match the standards needed of a Premier League full-back these days.
When Manchester United let Diogo Dalot join AC Milan on a season-long loan deal, everyone expected them to bring in another right-back to challenge Wan-Bissaka, as it was done with Luke Shaw at left-back with the signing of Alex Telles from FC Porto.
But, the board failed to gauge the situation. As a result, it is in the January transfer window, where they will hopefully look to rectify their mistake. As reported by Mail Sport, United are looking to sign Max Aarons from Norwich City if they miss out on Atletico Madrid’s Kieran Trippier in January. The Red Devils have been keeping tabs on him for a while.

However, having been found guilty of breaching betting regulations, Trippier wouldn’t play football for at least another nine weeks, meaning Manchester United would be reluctant to finalise a deal for the former Tottenham Hotspur star in January anyway.
Therefore, the signing of Max Aarons would make a lot of sense for the Red Devils. Although Wan-Bissaka scored his first Premier League goal against Newcastle United this season, the London-born full-back has been heavily criticized for his distribution. Questions have also been raised over his positioning while defending set-pieces.
Dalot won’t be returning before the end of the campaign from his loan spell. And with Manchester United in the middle of a title battle, there is a vigorous need of strengthening the roster in January.
An integral part of the Norwich City side, Aarons has played every minute of his 22 appearances for the Championship side and racked up one goal and three assists for the table-toppers thus far. And considering his potential and the familiarity with Premier League football, the young English full-back would be a perfect challenger for Wan-Bissaka at Old Trafford.
