Manchester United have made a decision about Jesse Lingard’s future at the club as his contract is months away from running out.

At one point of time, Jesse Lingard was one of the most highly-rated players at Manchester United. It is safe to say that his career has not panned out the way he would have hoped for though.

Since the arrival of Bruno Fernandes, he has been surplus to requirements at Old Trafford. And it is looks like he is set to leave his boyhood club sooner or later. A loan move away in January looks likely but there are questions about his long-term future at the club as well.

The 28-year-old has made just two appearances this season and it is unlikely that he will be afforded much more playing time unless there are some injuries to key players. His contract runs out next summer though and as a result the club have a huge decision on their hands.

And according to reports in the Daily Mail, they have indeed decided that they will trigger a one-year extension clause his contract to keep him to tied to the club for another year.

Of course, that does not mean that Lingard will start getting first-team chances anytime soon but it goes mean that Lingard won’t walk out of the Old Trafford for free at the end of the season. It also gives the Red Devils more time to find clubs who are willing to pay a significant transfer fee to acquire the Englishman’s services.

It will be interesting to see whether the club do decide to let him leave on loan in January though. It makes sense for all parties involved. Lingard will get minutes on the pitch while it will take some pressure off of United’s wage list.
